Recycled dog food bag into grocery bag

So here I am at home after the holidays. My sewing room is a mess and I should be doing some dishes. Instead I’ve decided to use the empty dog food bag that has been sitting in our garage for the last month and make a new grocery bag. Now like any of you that have four-legged kids you probably accumulate A few of these bags every month or so. The dog food that we get has such a pretty picture on the front of a wolf that I thought it would be a great reusable bag. On Pinterest I’ve seen these made out of chicken feed bags and other cool animal feed bags. Currently I only buy the medium size bag of dog food, which is about 25 pounds. The tutorials I found normally use 40 to 50 pound bags. I know why after creating my first bag. Although I still think it’s a great use of bags that would have otherwise gone to the landfill, next time I will try and use a larger bag.

Sewing this bag was not hard, but I also really didn’t care about how it looked either. Made it easy and harder at the same time. Since you are not using normal fabric, ironing is out of the question. This made folding over the top and sewing inside the bag very difficult. I just pressed hard on the sewing foot and hoped for the best. I don’t have a walking foot but I could see how it would help move the material along. Overall the bag is a nice size for taller items I buy at the store. Such as a baguette or celery. It’s not very wide but it is very deep. I will be adding this to my gaggle of bags. Hopefully if I make more bags I will actually start remembering to bring them to the store.

Here is Bodie and Lord Stanley sitting next to what used to be their dog food bag. I don’t know how they feel about it the look on their face is definitely “WTF? This is what we live with every day.”
